Changes to law on dogs to be discussed later

The City Commission voted Monday to approve the first reading of an amendment to the city's dog ordinance that addresses vicious and dangerous dogs.

The ordinance, based upon current state law, avoids mentioning specific breeds. Under the ordinance, residents could identify a dog they believe to be dangerous and a judge or magistrate would decide whether it is.

The commissioners wanted the ordinance to include exceptions for police dogs and leader dogs for the blind and to specify what action can be taken before a dog causes harm. They are to discuss those changes at their next meeting.
